For more than 5000 years, the Chinese have been developing, improving and perfecting health-promoting herbal recipes. More than 80,000 herbal prescriptions are recorded, whose precise quantities and proportions are crucial to their efficacy. In fact, many of today's wonder drugs were derived from traditional herbal formulations.
Around 400 different herbs are commonly used to treat a wide variety of illnesses. These herbs are usually prescribed in combinations, selected according to a patients particular pattern of symptoms. This is one of the key features of Chinese medicine - it is tailored to the individual. Chinese herbal treatments can nowadays be prescribed in the form of tablets or capsules, avoiding the need to boil up raw herbs. As well as being more convenient, this modern format has the advantage of standardised dosage and rigorous quality control. Modern pharmacological research has shown that the herbs used in Chinese medicine have a wide range of effects. Among other things they can fight infection, improve immunity, reduce inflammation and regulate the function of the respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive and endocrine systems.
